unendingbeginning - Steve Lovett

The show, unendingbeginning sees Lovett revisiting long-standing themes in his art

practice, re-reading the idea of place and experiences attached to those locations in an

attempt to make sense of what has happened, and how we become who we are as a result.

The images gathered together in this new body of work are reconstructions of historical

facts, transit points between the personal and the collective. Lovett, suggests new

articulations of modes of storytelling that are elliptical, subjective and, embody the desire to

show the multiple ways in which individual, small observations—sometimes fictional,

—jostle and intersect with history. In this work Lovett has collected the debris of the past

binding it, at least temporarily, to the present.

Operating between modes of photographic recording and data collection translated into the

printed recollection of ink Lovett assembles a sequence of still image streams emphasizing

the importance of visual discernment, analogue concentration, emphasizing the slowness of

looking.

The Point of Incidence

This installation and dance-film works by Amber Liberté, examine the complexity and quietness of reflection, and the intrinsic connection to things outside of ourselves, and them to us, whether we are aware of this or not.

“the way we perceive the world is very much a reflection of our inner worlds:

the people in it / the landscape surrounding us / the different cultures / the environment / the state of things / the art we respond to / the people we cross paths with  / our habitats and habits / the cultures we carry / the environments we’re surrounded by / the continual internal and external shifting state of things

we are a mirror image to all living things,
while they reflect our inner worlds back to us”

at the point of incidence is in ongoing development [since 2019], and previous iterations span across various sites including: Ōrākei beaches, Te Whanganui A Tara / Whakatū / Māwhera / Wānaka / Waihōpai / Ōtepoti / Te Maru / Ōtautahi / Te Matau-a-Māui / Papaioea /  Kāpiti / and Tāmaki Makaurau for Footnote NZ Dance, Tempo Dance, and site specific installations for Ōrākei beaches.
